Assisted Living Community Myths
The care of our senior loved ones or aging parents is important. But sometimes the resources and support are not available at home to provide the care they need.
So, you consider assisted living options. The problem is that there are stories that may dissuade you from committing to care away from home because there is the concern that the care is not appropriate, and seniors suffer from mistreatment.
At Benton House, we aim to provide caregivers and family resources and knowledge to learn more about how assisted living care works and combat misconceptions and myths.
What are Some Common Myths?
1. Poor Care Quality
Assisted living communities have a reputation for delivering subpar care to residents. Where seniors are not properly supported and left to fend for themselves.
In actuality, Benton House communities serving seniors provide comprehensive solutions. Support is delivered by certified staff that consider residents family. Here, there is no room for anything outside of respect, love, and admiration.

2. Loss of Independence
The fear that residents will lose autonomy and cannot continue to do the things they enjoy.
Our team strives to provide residents with as much independence as possible. We encourage residents to pursue their interests, attend lectures on informative topics, and spend time with friends and family. Benton House also provides daily events and activities for residents to enjoy.
3. Undisclosed Extra Costs
Service providers do not discuss hidden costs in the beginning, which leaves families feeling like they are being nickel-and-dimed into higher rates.
Assisted living costs are clear from day one. There are no hidden or surprise fees suddenly added when choosing Benton House.
4. Unwelcoming to Different Faiths
My loved one’s beliefs and faith are not honored or supported.
Benton House offers a variety of spiritual services. We embrace our differences in beliefs and welcome anyone, regardless of their spiritual beliefs.
5. It’s Too Expensive
Costs associated with assisted living are prohibitively expensive, there is no way to afford them.
This is a common myth related to assisted living. But in truth, the average cost of assisted living care per month in the United States is $4,500 per month. Which is comparable to daily living costs for people with no extra care.
Costs vary depending on the state and level of care, but they are not as high as people may expect.
6. Residents are Stuck within the Community
The fear that loved ones cannot leave the premises.
Benton House organizes a variety of outings to local businesses, restaurants, and other points of interest. Residents are also welcome to travel with family or other means of getting around if they cannot drive.
7. Disability or Illness is a Requirement
People believe residents must have high levels of support to qualify for assisted living care.
Care and support are ranges where some need more help than others. But that does not mean that there is a required threshold before benefiting from assisted living. It simply means that residents need a little help with ADLs (activities of daily living). It could be as simple as needing help with putting on socks or as comprehensive as adjusting water settings and dignified bathing help.
8. Pets are Not Allowed
Loved ones would have to give up their companions.
At Benton House, we are proud to be pet friendly. The companionship a pet provides is a blessing and pets become mascots by default.
Many of our communities already have house dogs, and through our Benton Doodle program, we are planning more puppies for the future.
9. Residents are not Allowed Belongings
The belief that residents must live in the spaces as provided, no room for belongings.
We feature a variety of apartments that can be personalized with furniture and other belongings. This provides residents with the option to make an apartment their own. Where they enjoy a warm home with all the right touches that are truly theirs.
10. Communities don’t Promote Healthy Lifestyles
Families worry residents are not active and risk their health with unhealthy practices.
Our team strives to encourage residents to remain active every day. Part of our activities include options like exercise classes and walking clubs. Residents can choose their level of activity and enjoy quality time with friends.
11. The Food is Lacking
Many believe that food served within assisted living communities is not the quality it should be.
Benton House features a menu with a dozen daily options for restaurant-style meals. We prepare delicious meals every day using fresh ingredients.
